Eglalquadian Republic

The Eglalqudian Republic is the only Republic in Ellonde – a system devised by the ingenious President Nithdur of the Republic. The Republic is united against the Erelian Empire, to the point that they have allied with the hated Monarchical powers across Ellonde. The state has a volunteer army, and is more “rough” than its neighbor Belonde – and though they dislike their mother country, they fear the Empire even more. The Republic is the youngest nation in Ellonde, having only existed for 11 years, since 5027. It is also war torn, having gone through a devastating yet successful civil war against Belonde for its independence.

Geography

The Republic is surrounded by the Sasparin Seas to the north, Vallonde to the west, and the Belonde to the east. Its interior consists of primarily woodlands and other small bodies of water are also scattered throughout it.

History and Culture

The republic was originally part of Belonde. Belonde was originally an alliance formed between six vassal states: Sairina, Aewen, Lindisse, Nella, Illuin, and Ollo. These states consist of a central capital ruled by a feudal lord, surrounded by merchants and businessmen in the capital, and large populations of serfs toiling in menial labor, focusing more on woodworking and logging in the former three, and more on crafting in the latter three. The alliance was formed in 5000, and was made to challenge the Erelian Empire. The empire was seen as a threat to the Elven vassal states, and as such, the Elven ruled states formed an alliance to go against it.

The three western provinces – Sairina, Aewen, and Lindisse – were seen as cruder, less refined cultures than the latter three – Nella, Illuin, and Ollo. Therefore, it was little surprise to all but the highest ruling classes when the former three vassal states split off to form the Eglalquadian Republic, a political entity unlike anything seen in Ellonde before. A bloody civil war from 5010-5027 reduced the Elven armies – the only armies that would have possibly stood a chance against the Erelian Empire – to a fraction of their size. In the end, the Republic won, seperating itself from its homeland. Though ties were never truly repaired, for the time being, they maintain an uneasy truce, as the Empire still looms large on the horizon.

In the Republic – consisting of Sairina, Aewen, and Lindisse – a volunteer army of devoted citizens was raised, though they were still fighting a losing battle, with outdated technologies and an army destroyed by civil war. As time went on, the Republics troops were reduced so far that it was forced to fight on the defensive – and since the Empire cared more about Thaczil, it survived; but should the Empire ever turn its eye on it, the Elven Republic will fall.

Demographics and Biodiversity

The leadership of Belonde primarily consists of Wood Elves and Half elves, and is under the control of President Nithdur, who has been elected by a majority since the nation’s conception 11 years ago. Along with the president is a parliamentary council and a courts system, all of which can theoretically debase another branch should it become too corrupt.

A majority of the population is also elven, with 70% being elven, and 28% being half elven, and the other 2% split among other races nearly equally, but who often must remain hidden for safety reasons. These other races, be they high elves, dwarves, and humans or orcs, goblins, and other monsters – as well as mixed race beings for most types, except half-elves – are often imprisoned and given a trial if a minor infraction is noted – and if they fail, which they often do, they are publicly executed by being stoned in an arena. Unlike most other nations in Ellonde, the population is actively involved in accusing criminals, with any full citizen (meaning, any wood elf or half elf) being free to accuse anyone else as they please.

As for wildlife in the lands, mindless monsters of the forests found in Ellonde can be located, along with sea monsters on the coast; and most of these monsters roam freely, desecrating towns and settlements as they wish – but often, towns are active enough to fight these monsters and defeat them themselves. Monster hunters are not as sought out as much as in other parts of the land, and even if they are, they are usually wood/half elves. Outside of that, typical species of animal are found in the forests and seas (ie, in an alternate reality, equivalent to Europe/ North America).

Economy and Politics

The system adopted by the Republic uses the gold, silver, copper, and platinum system present since time immemorial as its primary currency. Opton Banking, the banking monopoly of Ellonde, under Pipper Diles, holds a monopoly here, through its half elven branch (though Pipper is much less advertised here than in other regions, instead being replaced by a half elf model). However, the old system of bartering is still allowed to function at present.

The political system consists of the Republic consists of an electoral system in which elections are held where all citizens (ie. wood/half elves) votes count. There is a court system and a parliamentary system which both have power as well in passing laws.
As the Republic is an Elven state, Wood and Half Elves are the only representatives in the nations ruling class.

Foreign Relations and Military

The military of the Republic consists of a volunteer army and hired elven mercenaries who work for the Kingdom. When part of Belonde, it originally was part of an army nearly 2 times the size of the Empire. This army had efficient technology for its time (before the empire developed new technologies), and was considered the largest threat to the Empire after the fall of the Central Kingdoms (who were quashed after surprise attacks), and had it not fallen into Civil war, the strong possibility exists that it might have been able to quash it before its rise.

Today, the Republic is a minor threat to the Erelian Empire, and with the empires forces numbering nearly 500 times greater than the states, there is little it can do. It primarily fights with ranged weapons, though crude magic and melee weapons are also used – they are all ineffective against the Empires new superior technology. However, the Republic is the only state actively trying to fight the Empire head on, attempting to convert it to its ideology and place its master races – the Wood and High Elves – at the top of the helm. There are also rumors that it is trying to make plans to stab Belonde in the back as well.

The Republic is (uneasily )allied with Belonde and the other monarchical states, and fighting the Erelian Empire. However, tensions are tight between the dwarven and the high elven states, and war will probably break out should the Empire disappear.
